PGA Pro Barry Bonifield illustrates how to improve your short game. If you find yourself having a hard time judging distance and pushing shots to the right, you may only need a simple grip change.
If the thumb of your right hand is on top of the club, your grip is considered to be a weak grip and you need to strengthen your grip. If you’re a right handed golfer, you do that by turning your left hand clockwise around the grip so that your thumb runs down the top right side of the shaft and your right hand should have the lifeline cover the top of your left thumb.
To execute the swing correctly, the toe of the club points at the sky in the backswing “and” the followthrough so that you get correct forearm rotation. If you use the weak grip, the clubface will point at the sky in the followthrough which adds loft and causes the ball to push to the right of your target.
The challenge with a grip change is that is can take a couple weeks to several weeks to get to where the grip feels comfortable to you.
