A shank is caused because you get too close to the golf ball at impact. If your weight is too much over your toes, you can lose balance and lean over at impact and shank it. Make sure you have good balance over the balls of your feet, not your toes. Put more weight in your heels.
Also, if you have too much bend in the angle between your arms and the club, that line straightens out on the downswing. Check your left wrist at setup just before swinging the golf club; if the top of your left wrist is flat it’s too straight and if you add just a tiny bit of bend to your left wrist, that will be good, but too much can result in a shank.
Keep your posture steady during the swing. Lowering your head at impact will get you closer to the golf ball.
If your arms hang to closely to your body at setup, they will move away from your body at impact. When you are ready to hit the golf ball, release your right hand from the grip and let your arm hang freely. Your hand should hang just to the side of the grip exactly where you would be gripping it. If your hand hangs out farther than where you were gripping it, the club is too close to your body; push the club away creating more room between the club and your body until your arm hanging freely is in the correct position on the grip.
