*Golf Tips Magazine — Getting a Great Read

January 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

Reading the green doesn’t start when you get to the green. It starts when you are approaching the green. In this golf lesson video, Rick Sessinghaus divides the art of green reading into four parts, from approaching the green to standing over the ball.

1. Observe the lay of the land from 100 yards out. Determine which way everything slopes in general.
2. Once you’re on the green, look for the high and low points of the green and notice where the rain would drain off during a rain storm. Another tip to remember is that the majority of greens slope from back to front.
3. Once you’re at your golf ball, walk from where your golf ball is to the hole and notice what slope your feet feel. Also, you’ll get a better feel of the distance of your putt.
4. Get behind your ball and look toward the cup and see how much break there is specifically. Pick a point that you will putt at that will give you the amount of break and distance you need for the golf ball to finish slightly beyond the cup.
