In this golf instruction video, Shawn Clement, CPGA Professional, shows you how to hit those uneven lie golf shots on uphill, downhill and sidehill lies.
The primary goal is to try to match your spine angle and swing plane and path more closely to the angle of the slope that you are playing the shot off of. A downhill shot will feel like you are hitting downhill and an uphill shot will feel like you are hitting it toward the sky somewhat.
Downhill shot
1. Your weight goes on your front foot and stays there throughout the shot because you won’t have any significant weight shift to your back leg. If you have your weight on your back leg at impact, you’ll hit it fat and could miss the golf ball entirely.
2. The ball position is in the middle or slightly forward in your stance.
3. Rotate around your front leg.
4. Keep your follow-through low and down the slope to ensure good contact. Never try to lift the ball. Always hit down into the ball and let the golf club do the work.
Uphill shot
1. Your weight goes on your back foot and stays there throughout the shot. On your backswing, your weight stays on the “inside” of your back foot just like on a normal shot and your weight will still be largely on your back foot at the finish.
2. The ball position is in the middle or slightly forward in your stance.
3. Rotate around your back leg.
4. Let your momentum carry you up the hill with your follow-through completing high to ensure good contact.
Ball below the feet
1. Sit down more with the weight more toward the heels which stays there throughout the swing.
2. Keep the back foot solidly on the ground to help clear out the left side at impact and allow the momentum of the swing to transfer your weight to the front foot at the finish.
Ball above the feet
1. The weight should be on the balls of your feet but keep your heels on the ground and don’t allow them to float.
2. Swing through the ball making your club head swing through the target line and down the target line toward the finish.
