Practice Drills:How To Perform The Perfect Golf Swing
This golf instruction video shows you how to prepare for and execute a golf swing.
1. Positioning Yourself - Find a small object a few feet in front of your golf ball that is in line with your target. Visualize a straight line to the target (target line). Address the golf ball and align your clubface square to the target line while aligning your feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the target line.
2. Grip - Place the grip in your left hand with the grip on top of your forefinger and underneath your palm. Wrap your fingers around the grip. The line between your thumb and forefinger should point at somewhere between your right ear and your right shoulder. Your right hand’s lifeline fits over the top of your left thumb. The calluses at the base of the fingers of your right hand rest against the side of the grip. The palms of both hands should face each other. Use an interlocking, Varden, or 10 finger grip to lock the hands together.
3. Your feet should be wide enough to provide stability but not restrict your torso from turning. The widest your feet are apart is shoulder width fitting your shoulders between your feet for a driver and getting a narrower stance for shorter clubs. You bend over slightly at the waist while maintaining good back posture so your arms hang down freely about a fist width distance from your body. The weight should be in the balls of your feet. This is called an “athletic stance.” Imagine if someone was going to throw a rock at you to try and hit you and you needed to assume a stance that would give you the most ability to move quickly out of the way to the left or right.
4. Start the swing by rotating the upper torso and simultaneously rotating the forearms. Imagining a giant rubber band attached to the tip of your golf club and the golf ball and you need to stretch that rubber band straight back away from the golf ball. 5. Maintain a constant grip pressure throughout the golf swing.
6. The more your shoulders turn while keeping the hips in place, the more tension and power you will create in your upper body. If your shoulders turn 90 degrees and your hips turn 45 degrees, that will create more power than if your hips turn 60 degrees. 7. On the backswing, to get your hands to the top of your swing correctly, imagine a horizontal rope that is parallel to the target line, and above and behind you. You are reaching back to grab that rope. Once you grab the rope, you are pulling it down toward the golf ball while keeping your arms extended. On the backswing, about 70% of your weight plants on the inside of your right foot. Do not lock your right knee; keep if flexible.
8. On the downswing, the body moves and reacts just like when you throw a base ball. Your lower body moves first starting at the legs, waist, torso, arms, forearms and wrists. Imagine throwing a ball into the ground with your right arm to get the feel of releasing the clubface into the golf ball.
