In this golf instruction video, PGA pro Jack Nicklaus talks about the most critical point of a good golf swing; the start of the swing. The moment you start your backswing, you determine how the rest of your golf swing is going to happen. If your backswing starts back correctly, then your downswing will be correct as well and it will be much easier to have good solid impact with the golf ball.
If you start the golf club back on the inside, then on the downswing the clubface will impact the golf ball from the outside which creates a slice. If you start the golf club back on the outside, then on the downswing the clubface will impact the golf ball from the inside which creates a hook.
If you take the golf club back too low or too high from the start, you’ll lose power and distance; on a low backswing, your wrists probably aren’t hinging properly. With a high backswing, your wrists can be over hinging or your arms may be bending bringing the golf club closer to your body. All of these scenarios mean you lose leverage which is necessary to create power.
