PGA Golf Pro Roger Gunn - Getting the Feel for distance inside 100 yards

August 9th, 2007 · No Comments

Most golfers have a hard time hitting golf shots when it’s no longer a full swing with a wedge. In this instruction video, Roger explains that eyeballing the part swing wedge shots and trying to “feel” the shot isn’t really reliable and consistent. The best way to consistently get the right distance is to practice a half swing shot with your wedges (sand, lob, gap and pitching) and find out what distance you average out of your half swing. For example, Roger’s half swing sand wedge goes 57 yards, lob wedge 49 yards, gap wedge 68 yards, and his pitching wedge goes 83 yards.

To hit distances that are yardages that are in between, you decide which club you want to hit and hit it a little harder or a little softer. Another good way to alter distance which Roger fails to mention is by simply choking down. For example if you hit an 85 yard half swing pitching wedge, how far would that exact same swing with the same golf club go if you choked down 1 inch or 2 inches? You can hit more practice shots and find out very easily.

If you are a low handicapper and have a 50-60 yard shot, you should expect to land this shot within 10 feet of your target and be surprised if you are out 15-20 feet. Within 30 yards you should be within 5 feet of your target.
