PGA Golf Pro Roger Gunn - Practicing Correctly for Improvement

August 9th, 2007 · No Comments

In this golf instruction video, Roger illustrates 2 different practicing techniques.

Working on your swing
1. Getting a feel for certain positions or movement
2. May or may not be aiming at a target
3. Having someone or something like a video camera monitor you for correct positioning.
Once you have a nice golf swing, there is much more to be done on the practice range.

Perfecting your aim
1. Lay down a golf club parallel to your target line so you know exactly what you are aiming at. When laying a golf club down parallel to the target line, recognize that while your target is a golf pin for example and your golf club is say 2 feet away from the golf ball (target line) closer to you, the golf club should be pointing 2 feet left of the golf pin that is your target, making the golf club exactly parallel to your target line. If for example you point the golf club directly at your target the golf pin, then your target line will be pointing parallel to the right side of your target, which if you weren’t aware of that and you were hitting your shots to the right, you might be placing the blame incorrectly on an error in your swing when in reality that is exactly where your target line is pointing.
2. Place a golf club on the ground perpendicular to your target line golf club. Use this club as the center of your stance so that you constantly aware of the position of the golf ball in your stance.

Perfecting your execution
Once you feel that you have your swing down and can hit straight toward your target, then pick up the golf clubs and start hitting balls at various targets as if you were hitting on the golf course to see if you can put everything together. Mix it up and hit different clubs to different targets.

Making the most use of the little time that you have to actually practice; break your practice into 2 halves.

1. The Scoring Game (The Important Part of Practice)
Chipping, Short Game Shots, Bunker Shots, Putting, Rough, and anything inside 50 yards. Always practice your scoring game first before the Long Game to ensure that you fit it in and don’t miss it.

2. The Full Swing Long Game. Hitting well is fine, but without a good short game, you won’t score well which is what everyone wants at the end of the day.
