In this golf instruction video, Roger explains that sometimes you have to assess your risk and take a safe out to minimize double and triple bogies. Sometimes, you have a downhill landing area and not enough green to stop the golf ball and and by going at the pin, you risk going over the green and into whatever hazard is on the other side like a lake. In that situation you aim for the fat side of the green to ensure you get on the putting surface and take your chances with putting to save par.
Setup
1. Square the clubface to the target so it eliminates some of the effect of the “bounce” on the sole of the clubhead and makes it so you can dig into the sand and eliminate the possibility of the clubhead bouncing directly into the ball sending the ball across the green.
2. Swing the club up and down more steeply.
