Roger Gunn doesn’t like to hit this shot unless it’s absolutely necessary because it’s not a consistent shot. However, it’s great to know how to do it when the situation presents itself. In this golf instruction video Roger explains in details how to setup for and execute this golf shot.
For this shot, there needs to be some grass underneath the ball so before you hit the shot, you need to sole the club near the back of the ball and test the conditions to make sure there is enough grass under the ball to be able to execute it correctly.
1. Use the 60 degree wedge
2. Open the clubface about 45 degrees (Open the clubface and then grip the club normally. Don’t open the clubface by gripping first and then twisting the hands/forearms.)
3. Open stance.
4. Aim to the left to compensate for the open clubface hitting the ball to the right.
5. Hands behind the ball with the club laying back (Increases the loft even more)
6. Use a little wider stance and a little more bent knee to get your body closer to the ground because when the club shaft is laid backward slightly, the grip is closer to the ground.
7. Put the grip in the middle of your stance in front of your zipper.
8. Swing nearly a full swing to get a little distance. Most people don’t swing hard enough to get the ball to travel just a little ways. The clubface is so open at this point that most of the energy from the clubhead is used to get the ball upward and not forward.
9. Don’t try to hit or lift the golf ball up at all. Let the golf club do the work
10. Practice practice practice. This is a shot that will require some attention to get good at it.
