Shawn Clement, CPGA Golf Pro explains what the swing plane is, what affects it and how it differs from short to long golf clubs.
There is a natural swing plane when you swing a golf club. If your backswing is inside or outside that swing plane, then your plane will be reversed on the downswing. For example, an inside swing path promotes an outside downswing and vice versa.
Swinging several times in succesion like Shawn does in this video will help you to establish what your swing path is for that club and then remember that as the golf clubs get longer, your swing path gets flatter or as the clubs get shorter, your swing plane gets more vertical or upright.
